Brian the Lion early assets

1994 Reflections

Platform: Amiga

Just a short post thanks to Grzegorz Antosiewicz, who has highlighted some screenshots showing assets that never appeared in the final game.

Firstly, Amiga Format and Amiga Joker magazines both showed earlier versions of the title screen, which you can compare to the eventual one:

In early version on the left, you can see lion claws and each word is written in a different colour and font (blue for “Brian”, white for “the” and yellow for “Lion”). The finished version has nice animated effects, such as rotation, scaling and pixelization etc.

Grzegorz spoke with Phil Baxter, who was responsible for creating the graphics and stage layouts. He was very kind to share his experience about his work, informing us that it was his first game. In early development, he revealed there was going to be more levels placed on an additional island themed within a wild west setting.

It was going to be placed after first island on the left above, and before second island on the right above. However, there was not enough time to work on it and the section was cut from the finished game. Phil confirms that the section only ever existed as sketches and designs.

If you look on the left of the first map, you can see there is desert on the left part, but no desert themed stages in the game. In the very early game plot, there was going to be a devastation wave that consumed land from left to right. It was cut because the player can walk on the map path and revisit stages and Reflections had no time to create more maps for altered stages.

With thanks to Grzegorz Antosiewicz.
