Uridium 2

1993 Renegade / Graftgold

Platform: Amiga CD32

Just a very short entry for now on Andrew Braybrook’s sequel to the classic Uridium, which was released on various Amiga platforms in late 1993. However, also on the cards was an Amiga CD32 version which had enhanced music and sound effects, as well as palette changes on some of the screens due to Andrew’s colour-blindness.

At this stage, we’re not sure what else would have featured – we assume there would have been additional levels and details in the graphics. However, Andrew mentioned the following snippet on his blog:

“The ill-fated Uridium 2 CD32 version also was getting a 4-button controller mode, but it was never completed. That game had a simpler control mode anyway.”

He also mentions about having his soul crushed when the CD32 edition was cancelled – suggesting that this wasn’t just merely a conversion of his AGA work. There was a lot more going on. We hope to learn more from Andrew soon on the development to add here and will continue to update the page as more comes to light.

In the meantime, a segment was included in the Graftgold History book, where the following is mentioned:

“An Amiga CD32 port of Andrew Braybrook’s shoot-em-up sequel was approximately half-completed before poor sales of the original Amiga game caused development to halt. Based on the AGA version of Uridium 2, the game was to include extra CD music from Jason Page. The AGA version had Mayhem Mode activated by default and sported an extended colour palette. It also went unreleased.”

Galahad then mentioned that the game did indeed exist, but was just an Amigados file loading a version of the disk version of the game (which was non-dos based). Binary Emotions at the time were asked to look at the game with a view to publishing it. Other than the system compliant loading and faster loading from CD, there wasn’t enough differences for them to consider publishing. So, there was a copy at the time – but they were at the time trusted not to leak it and no copy was kept hold of as a result.

If you know anything more about the development, please do get in touch. With thanks to Jürgen Clausen for highlighting, Galahad for information about the game, Ross Sillifant and Archive.org for the extra press scan, to Graeme Mason for the Graftgold History book snippet and Codetapper for the title screen shot.
